- In September we held a free local walking tour down a few historic lanes in Quiogue. There were 16 buildings from the earliest days of Quiogue on the tour, which was organized as an adjunct to our “A Place Called Quiogue” summer museum exhibit.
Approximately 20 people enjoyed the tour, learning about the founding families in this hamlet along the way. The tour lasted about a hour and a half and focused on the historic homes built by this “Summer Colony” whose founders arrived in the area seeking a respite from the heat and filth of city life in the late 1800’s. The hamlet began to grow when a small private boarding home was opened by a ministers’ wife for friends and congregation members (all were teetotalers -no alcoholic beverages allowed).

The tiny community was very close-knit and loved outdoor sports like swimming and tennis, but especially loved sailing. The Quantuck Yacht club was soon formed. The site of the Yacht Club and part of its early history was also part of the tour. Sheets for a self-guided tour are available at the museum. 631-288-1139- Volunteers have undertaken training sessions with All Museum Services’ Steven A. Czarniecki to learn the accessioning process. This specialized training, funded by
The Robert L. Gardiner Foundation,
will continue in November. We’re looking forward to our next training session. Take a peek at a few of the items we have received recently.
