THIS MONTH’S NEWS
- Last Month’s Inaugural Dinner-Lecture was a wonderful success! Our initial expected attendance of 40 grew to over 80! We all shared an enjoyable buffet meal at Buoy One restaurant, and were then delighted with an animated history lesson – Did you know this about Long Island? by former history teacher and past Trustee of the Suffolk County Historical Society, Noel Gish. We are all looking forward to the next in this Series! Date TBA
- Several Trustees participated in the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Member John Berdinka graciously lent us the use of his personally restored car to transport two of our favorite local ladies – Rose Loos and Jean Tocko both Centenarians!
- Our Board Members have been diligently working on various projects for the coming year.
- Bob Murray has been working on this summers’s exhibit “A Place Called Quiogue”. One room is almost completely set up already!
- Board Member Lauren Barlow is meeting with Principal Christopher Herr and Dariah Luciano, the Broadcast Journalism teacher at WHBHS, in regard to interviewing John Comba and Rose Loos, two local centenarians. They both just reached the age of 100 last month. Mr. Comba was the Industrial Arts teacher for many years and later was Principal of the Westhampton Beach Junior High School, as well as Coach of the High School baseball team. Rose worked locally at the Suffolk Co. Water Authority and at the now closed Seaside Bank and Suffolk Life Newspaper, Both interviews promise to be most interesting!
- Plans are under way for a house tour in Quiogue later in the summer to coincide with our summer exhibit.
- Our new President Jon Stanat is arranging for several board and staff members to meet with Steven A. Czarniecki of All Museum Services to continue our training in archiving our collections.
- New Trustee Dot Berdinka, along with members of our Education Committee are developing a lesson plan and activities for visiting classrooms from our local schools.
- We are scheduling our 1st YARD SALE of the year for June 4th. Please remember us when doing your Spring Cleaning! If you have furniture or large items that need to be picked up, call us at 288-1139 and ask for Liz or Jon. (If you want to drop something off, we’d also appreciate a call so someone can meet you at the Museum to accept the items.) NOTE: We can no longer take clothes, books, CDs, TVs or white goods. Thank you.
- Our Membership renewals for 2016 are well under way with about 20% of our membership responding to date.
– NEXT MONTH – May 2016
Final touches will be made to the exhibit before opening in June.
In celebration of The Town of southampton’s 375th Anniversary, there continue to be special events planned throughout the town highlighting our many villages. A traveling exhibit of artifacts from each Village in Southampton Town representing the unique culture of that area, is making the rounds throughout the town. March 11 was the opening at Hampton Bays Middle School where the display will remain until May 2 when the exhibit will travel to Quogue Elementary School and remain there until May 27th. Our contribution representing the western end of the Township, was “Henry” the duck and information on the era of Duck Raising in this area, from our “Just Ducky” exhibit of 2012. The exhibit travels to the Tuckahoe School from May 31 to June 24 and will then be visiting libraries throughout the summer before heading back into the schools for the 2016-17 academic year.
