THIS MONTH’S NEWS
- Our neighbor, the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, finally opened their new “digs!” The new firehouse is beautiful and wow – it is a huge space! As explained by Chief Halsey Stevens and Commissioner Fred Overton, the new firehouse provides the needed clearance space for the largest firetrucks and allows room as well for the firemen to easily move between trucks while encumbered with all their gear. The departments’ trucks are now in their new designated spaces and ready to go at a moments notice. We are always so appreciative to have such a fantastic, dedicated volunteer fire department – they have saved an untold numbers of lives, as well as buildings over the years. Thank you for your dedication and your vigilance on our behalf.
- In honor of the Fire Departments’ Open House celebration this year, we put together a small exhibit of Fire Department memorabilia and photos with information on past firehouses and past members. Visit the Departments’ website for more information http://www.westhamptonbeachfd.org/ We hope to have a page here dedicated to their history later this Fall.
- Our own Tuthill House Museum has just received a much needed repair and painting to our front porch. Maintenance never ends on a house – especially when it dates to 1841!
- As reported last month, our dedicated volunteers have undertaken training sessions with All Museum Services’ Steven A. Czarniecki to learn the accessioning process. This specialized training, funded by
The Robert L. Gardiner Foundation , will continue on Monday September 12. We’re looking forward to our next training session. Here are a few of the items we have received recently.
- September 10 is set for our next YARD SALE. We have already accumulated a nice selection of furnishings as well as charming household items. Come see what goodies we have for you and support your local Historical Society at the same time!
- September 17 is the date for our next local walking tour. This year in support of our “A Place Called Quiogue” exhibit, our tour will be through a portion of Historic Quiogue. The tour is free and there is no need to sign up – just arrive by 10 AM sharp at the parking lot of the Presbyterian Church (Main Street and Meeting House Lane) and be prepared to walk about 1.5 miles.

November 2016
- November – a normally quiet month here, is already scheduled on the 5th with a special visit from the Long Island Visitor’s Council who is sponsoring a “Celebrate the South Fork” campaign. They are starting with Westhampton Beach and with the WHB Historical Society! The Council will be sponsoring trolley transportation from various locations and the first stop will be our Tuthill House Museum.
