Net Reel at Winters’ Wharf Dedication
At the water’s edge below the Beach Lane Bridge, stands a historic net reel. This net reel was built be Capt. Ed G. Winters (“Big Ed”) using wood debris he salvaged from the 1938 Hurricane, and was originally located at the yacht basin on Library Avenue. It was later moved behind his Main Street residence. Finally, Capt. Winters moved the net reel, in the early 1950s, to its present location, the former site of his fish house: Winters’ Wharf. This net reel was used to dry fish nets from haul seining and those from his various commercial fishing boats, including the Wm H. Winters and E.G. Winters. It was actively used until 1978 and was restored by the Historical Society in 2007 with a grant from the Town of Southampton.
Below are pictures from the Dedication, held on May 22, 2007.
